How to Advocate for Your Health at the Doctor’s Office
health data privacy

Navigating healthcare as an immigrant or non-English speaker can be overwhelming, but you deserve to be heard. Here’s how to advocate for yourself or your loved ones:

  1. Bring a trusted friend or family member
Having someone by your side can help with communication, note-taking, and emotional support.
  2. Write down your questions before your appointment
Doctors are busy, and it’s easy to forget what you wanted to say. Make a short list of your symptoms, questions, or concerns.
  3. Ask for a medical interpreter—it’s your right
Hospitals and clinics are required to provide interpreters if you need one. Don’t hesitate to ask.
  4. Speak up if you don’t understand something
    Say things like:
    • “Can you explain that again in simpler words?”
    • “Do you have this information in Spanish?”

Be sure to share your personal concerns honestly.
Your provider needs to understand your daily life, stress, and any barriers to care properly, like food insecurity, finances, or family responsibilities.

Know that you belong in that room.
You have every right to be there and to receive care that is respectful and informed. Never let anyone make you feel less than.

Remember, your health is sacred, and your voice is powerful!
